Like seasons, trends come and go. Many of these designs should look fairly familiar, having popped up decades ago. Still, it’s refreshing to walk down memory lane and revisit tried-and-true fashions with a new perspective.
Khaki and brown abound on an adventure-packed safari where leopard, giraffe and crocodile patterns are easy to spot in the rough. Whether it’s a zebra-striped pillow or an exotic snakeskin trunk, this fashion-inspired staple is once again creeping up in wild designs. Bring the African jungle home with a tribal motif, and don’t shy away from mixing pebbled, black leather with smooth, tan linen.
Polished pebbles, jagged slate and soft shag will have your sense of touch humming. Nature and craft come together in an earthy palette of taupe, coffee and ivory. From distressed hardwood floors to coarsely woven rugs, these materials just beg you to run your fingers over them. Plus the uneven textures are warm and easy to layer.
The tailored plaids of the ’80s are cropping up on rugs, drapes and upholstered chairs everywhere. These textiles are crisp and classic, just like the polos and penny loafers of the spendthrift decade. Better yet, they appeal to both men and women. Think of your old schoolgirl skirt. And guys, wouldn’t your conservative, V-neck sweater vest look dapper against these fabrics?
Pudgy little pumpkins and brittle haystacks can only mean one thing—fall is upon us. Can’t you just smell those mugs of cinnamon and apple cider brewing? Celebrate the season of entertaining with décor in colors of caramel, burgundy, gold and chocolate. Embellish your front porch with pumpkins painted in shimmering metallics and other tokens of the harvest.
Travel back to a stylish era when turntables spun and tabletop fans whirred. Small appliances gleamed in bright red and polished silver, while black-and-white mosaic tiles reigned in the bathroom. Crystal knobs and oil-rubbed bronze also made quite the impact. These retro styles with their clean lines are just as fresh as they were decades ago.
